Strong second quarter lifts Weiser to win over Payette 44-29

Coming off a pair of tough league losses, the Lady Wolverines traveled to the dome for a pairing against the Payette Pirates to finish out their week of play, breaking the streak in a positive way and taking the “W” in a wildly aggressive 44-29 win from the Pirates.
Marissa Moyle had a nice quarter with a pair of baskets, one of which was a long ball in 3-point land, for a 5-point total.  Andrea Bouvia and Tobie Noyer both had a basket and the Wolverine defense held the Pirates to only 4-points from the field.  However, Wolverine fouls placed the Pirates on the line eight times and the Pirates capitalized on the free opportunity for 5-points, tying the game 9-9.
Despite only shooting 5 for 18 from the field, the Wolverines still outscored the Pirates 13-0 in the second quarter.
Alex Bittinger had a basket and a pair of free throws and Mattie Shirts also had 4-points, while Noyer added a basket and a free throw.  Maddy Erickson also had a basket, giving the Wolverines a slim 22-19 lead at halftime.
The Wolverines again returned from the halftime break with new vigor and Erickson added three baskets and a free throw during the third quarter.
Noyer and Mattie Shirts both had a 50 percent success rate from the line for 1-point apiece.
The big news, however, was the Wolverine defense and that they held the Pirates to only six shot attempts. With no success from the field for the Pirates and only a single free throw to their credit for the quarter, the Wolverines added to their lead 31-20.
The Wolverines continued to add to their lead in the final period with Erickson contributing a pair of baskets for 4-points.  Ivy Morris was successful from behind the arc for 3-points and Bouvia added another basket to the tally.
Previous struggles from the line were non-existent, however, for the Wolverines as Madison Phillips and Mattie Shirts both shot 100 percent from the charity stripe for 2-points apiece.
Meanwhile, the Wolverines allowed the Pirates only 6-points from the field, but Wolverine fouls placed them on the line ten times.  Fortunately, their earlier free throw successes had dissipated, and they only found their mark in 3 of the 10 attempts, allowing the Wolverines to outscore the Pirates 13-9 in the fourth quarter and take the game 44-29.
Maddy Erickson had a nice game, leading the Wolverines with 13-points and 7 rebounds, followed by Mattie Shirts with 7-points and 7 rebounds.  Tobie Noyer had 6-points and 11 rebounds, while Marissa Moyle had 5-points and 6 rebounds.  Andrea Bouvia and Alex Bittinger had 4-points apiece, Ivy Morris contributed 3-points and Madison Phillips had 2-points.
The win against the Pirates brings the Wolverines’ season record to 5-9 overall and 2-2 in SRV league play.
The frosh/soph team was unable to overcome the Pirates, but the junior \varsity squad added to their win column with a 38-20 victory.
