Some areas of the Treasure Valley reported record 3 inches of precipitation in February

The month of February goes into the almanac as one of the wettest on record in some locations in the Treasure Valley.
In Weiser, much of the precipitation fell in the form of rain with a couple of snowstorms mixed in that didn’t amount to a whole lot, a couple of inches.
Boise set an all-time record with 3.71 inches of precipitation in February, nearly four times the average .99 inches for the month.
In the western end of the Treasure Valley, the precipitation total in Ontario for the month was 3.12 inches, an amount that was  2.32 inches more than the average for the month of February.
The month of February more than made up for below-normal precipitation in December in the Treasure Valley – by a mile.
While the big snow months are usually November, December and January, this year the biggest snowpack accumulation happened in February in the mountains of southwest and central Idaho.
As of Monday, the Snotel automated measurement sites in the Weiser River drainage showed that a significant snowpack has accumulated over the  past 30 days.
The Snotel site at Bear Saddle recorded 91 inches of snow on Monday. The snowpack at Squaw Flat doubled over the past month.
On Feb. 3, the snowpack measured 51 inches. On March 4, the snowpack totaled 103 inches and had been as much as 113 inches.
The snowpack at the lower elevation Van Wyck Snotel site  in the Weiser River basin also doubled over the past month. As of Monday the snowpack total was 46 inches.
For Weiser-area farmers, it’s a waiting game for fields to dry out a bit before they can be prepared for spring planting. Onion and sugar beet growers typically like to get their fields planted by the end of March or early April.
Looking toward to spring and the official end of winter on March 20, it has not been an especially cold winter in areas of the Treasure Valley as far as low temperatures.
Some locations, such as Boise and Ontario did not see any single-digit low temperatures this winter.
The coldest temperature in Ontario, Ore., in December was 17 degrees on Dec. 5. The coldest morning in January also was 17 degrees and the low for February was 16 degrees on Feb. 7, according to the National Weather Service.
The coldest temperature recorded in Boise in December was 11 degrees. In January, the coldest morning was 14 degrees on Jan. 1.
Boise’s coldest temperature this winter occurred on Feb. 22, when the temperature dropped to 10 degrees.
