Residents asked to put Christmas trees on curb for pickup

The city of Weiser street department will begin collecting Christmas trees for disposal after the first of the year.
Residents are asked to put the trees out on the curb and not in the alley next to the trash. The street department uses pickup trucks to collect the discarded trees.
Christmas trees are not picked up by the city’s garbage trucks. The trees cause problems when trying to empty the trucks of trash, officials said.
City streets and parks supervisor Pat Malay said employees will collect the trees for at least a couple of weeks, until no more are spotted around town.
City officials will dispose of the trees by burning them in a pit. There is not an easy or effective way to recycle them. Employees tried to grind them up one year for mulch and ended up plugging up their equipment, Malay said.
In rural Washington County, Hardin Sanitation will pick up discarded Christmas trees through Jan. 3. The trees must be in four-foot sections and placed next to the trash can.
