Property taxes due Dec. 20

Property tax payments are due at the Washington County treasurer’s office on Dec. 20.
The bills for the 2018 property taxes were sent out in early November. Taxes are due for the year from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31.
Property owners have the option of paying the tax bill in full or in two installments, with the first payment due by Dec. 20 to avoid late charges and interest.
If the taxes are paid in two installments the second half is due by June 20, 2019.
Treasurer Sabrina Young said a significant portion of property owners in the county pay their taxes in full each December.
Payments must be received or postmarked by the due date to avoid penalties. State law allows the county treasurer to assess penalties on any unpaid portion of the tax bill if payment is not received or postmarked by the due date of Dec. 20.
A late charge of 2 percent of any unpaid portion is added at 5 p.m. on the due date. Interest accrues daily at the rate of 1 percent per month.
There are a number of ways to pay a property tax bill. Payments can be mailed to the county treasurer. Taxes can also be paid in person at the treasurer’s office in the Washington County Courthouse in Weiser.
Payments using a credit or debit card can be made over the phone. Taxes can also be paid online with a credit or debit card or an eCheck. There is a 2.5 percent processing fee on all credit/debit card or eCheck payments.
The county treasurer collects property taxes for taxing districts but does not set the property tax rate. The amount of property tax is based on the budget of the taxing districts, such as city, county local governments, fire district and school district.
Every year the county clerk’s office sends the taxing districts the assessed values of property once that has been determined by the county assessor. Each taxing district approves a budget and sets a tax levy.
State law doesn’t limit the increase in property taxes on an individual property but does limit the amount budgets for taxing districts can go up to 3 percent annually, plus a growth factor for new construction and annexation.
The tax deed proceedings for delinquent 2015 taxes will begin on Jan. 1. Property owners who owe back taxes to the county need to get caught up by Jan. 1, 2019, to avoid additional costs.
