Parents of deceased veteran thrilled to receive certificate from president

Cambridge resident Marie DeKnikker said tears flowed when she and her husband Albert received a certificate from President Trump that honors their late son for his military service.
Their daughter-in-law Christine DeKnikker sent it from Woodland, Calif. Marie shared the certificate with the Weiser Signal American.
“Words are inadequate to express our gratitude to President Trump for taking the time to send a remembrance of our son, Calvin Ardell DeKnikker, who passed away Dec. 27, 2017, from prostate cancer,” Marie said.
Calvin lost his three-year battle with cancer in 2017. After high school, he served in the U.S. Navy from 1974-1976 as a boiler tech/fireman aboard the USS Richard S. Edwards based in Pearl Harbor.
Following his service in the Navy, he earned two associate degrees from Yuba College, studied criminal justice at Sacramento State and founded a landscaping company.
He was active in the American Legion and was the commander and past commander of Yolo Post 77 and East Yolo Post in Sacramento, Calif. He was a founding member of the Yolo County Veterans Coalition and a past chaplain for the USS Richard S. Edwards Association.
The Yolo County Board of Supervisors in 1995 gave him the title of “Uncommon Patriot” for his dedication to recognize veterans of the USS Utah, which was bombed at Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941.
