A 100-year-old wooden barn that housed some antique vehicles quickly burned to the ground on Eaton Road last Wednesday afternoon.
The Weiser Area Rural Fire Department was called out at 12:52 p.m. to a farm west of Weiser. The barn was fully engulfed in flames when fire crews arrived.
The rural fire department put out a call for mutual aid to Weiser City Fire and Rescue. Payette rural fire was also called to bring a water tender.
Firemen from both departments hit all sides of the fire with water. The barn could not be saved and burned to the ground. Firefighters were able to save a nearby shed and a house. The shed contained an old tow truck and another vehicle that were damaged by the fire.
Weiser rural assistant fire chief John Stuart said the homeowner was burning weeds when the dry wood of the barn caught fire. The homeowner said he stepped around the corner for just a minute and when he came back one barn wall was on fire.
A neighbor said they were getting ready to combine some corn when they saw a plume of black smoke rising from the nearby property. It wasn’t long before a thick column of black smoke could be seen from Weiser.
Weiser rural fire brought two engines and two 3,000 gallon water tenders, along with about 14 firefighters and two command vehicles. Payette rural fire brought a water tender and the city fire department from Weiser brought an engine.
Stuart said firefighters spent about three hours at the scene. There were no injuries to any of the firemen.
