Nampa teacher hired to lead Cambridge school district

Cambridge school board trustees hired Nampa math teacher Anthony Butler as the next superintendent and high school principal last week following a community meet and greet and interview.
Butler was one of two finalists for the job of superintendent. Initially, there was a short list of three finalists picked by the Idaho School Boards Association, but one dropped out of consideration for the job, leaving Butler and another candidate.
The ISBA was hired by the Cambridge School Board to direct the search for a superintendent/high school principal to replace Ed Schumacher, who is leaving at the end of the current school year.
A community meet and greet with the finalists was held on Feb. 21. The Cambridge School District trustees conducted interviews on Friday, Feb. 22 and announced their selection that day.
The Cambridge school board’s decision to hire Butler came after a two-month process. The ISBA  reviewed candidate applications, conducted reference checks and research and held interviews.
“We are excited to have Mr. Butler join us in Cambridge. The board spent many hours contemplating candidates and felt that Mr. Butler would be the best person to continue the great work of our district,” school board chairman Nick Petitmermet said.
Butler told the Weiser Signal American that he grew up in Marsing and wanted to get back to a small school district. The Cambridge district has an enrollment of 131 students and a certified staff of 20, plus 13 support personnel.
“I look forward to the opportunity to raise my family in Cambridge, where the teachers know the students and their families and the whole community is there to support one another,” he said.
He is currently a math teacher in the Nampa School District, where he has taught for the past 10 years. As a teacher in a large school district, he is mostly limited to having an impact on students in his classroom, he said.
“Moving to administration will give me the opportunity to positively affect the whole school system and the greater community. I think that Mr. Schumacher and the board of trustees have done a great job creating a culture of positive learning in Cambridge, and I hope to continue that work for many years,” Butler said.
Butler received a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Northwest Nazarene University, a master’s degree in middle school math from Walden University, and is currently enrolled in the Educational Specialist – Executive Leadership program at Boise State University.
The school board will negotiate a contract with Butler. The announcement for the position said the district would offer a competitive compensation package including a salary range of not less than $80,000 and benefits.
Schumacher plans to return to teaching or counseling when his contract is up at the end of the current school year in June. He has served as the superintendent in Cambridge since 2007.
