Library is selling tile ‘leaves’ on tree mural
The Weiser public library is creating a unique mural of a tree with spreading branches and leaves made out of tiles that will wrap around the front checkout desk.
The mural project will officially start when the first 25 of the heart-shaped “leaves” have been purchased by the public. Each leaf on the tree will be inscribed with the name of a person or business that the purchaser wants to celebrate.
Each person who purchases a leaf will get a piece of paper to put a name on it and a one word description of that person, such as “musician,” “artist,” “father” or whatever. It could be a memorial to someone who is gone, or to living relatives or friends to be celebrated by writing their name on a leaf. The name will be transferred to a tile and painted.
Retired art teacher Liz Mowrey is the designer of the tree and will do the individual tiles. Once they are painted, they will go to Marbella, where owner Sandra Mockwitz will fire them in a kiln. Then they will be attached to the library mural.
Each heart to be placed on the permanent art installation will cost $30. The proceeds from the tile sales will go back to the library to buy books and other stuff.
As of Friday, 10 leaves had been sold, including one that will honor someone’s mother with her name and “genius.” The library should have at least 25 sold by the end of this week, library director Pat Hamilton said, and can get started on the mural project.
“It’s going to be beautiful,” she said.
Hamilton said the library mural will look similar to what is currently on the side of the Marbella’s building and will be a wonderful work of art to greet library visitors when they walk in. The tree mural project is a collaboration between the library, Liz Mowrey and Sandra Mockwitz of Marbella.
