Letter: We need leaders with character and resolve

Editor:
Two hundred and fortythree
years ago, a determined
people cast aside the bonds
of tyranny to forge a republic
dedicated to the principles of
self-governance.
Failures and obstacles
challenged the resolve of a
nation in its infancy to form
a more perfect union.
Though misguided at times
by the imperfections of man,
leaders with character and resolve
emerged with a steady
hand to guide a nation forward
through turbulent times.
From the ashes of despair,
leaders have risen in a continued
effort to unbind the
shackles of slavery and dared
to have a dream. From women
leading the way to gain
their vote, refusing to give up
their seat on a bus, to students
sitting in at a lunch counter,
our leaders held firm in their
convictions for the idea of a
more perfect union.
Leaders emerged from the
villainy of a date that will live
in infamy and the human horrors
of the Holocaust to, “ask
not what America will do for
you, but what together we can
do for the freedom of man.”
While each was flawed
in their own way, they stood
resolute in the face of despair.
From these leaders in history,
we saw an unflinching steadiness
and dedication to enable
the common good of the nation
and the world.
But now we find our leaders
lacking in the true ideals
needed to enable the common
good of the nation and the
world, character, and resolve.
The absence of character has revealed
itself through the politics
of fear, the demise of ethics, and
lack of moral fortitude.
By rekindling the dark
flames of hatred and bigotry,
our leaders have set aside
moral considerations for the
less fortunate, including those
seeking asylum from war, rape
and death.
The influx of women, children,
and the marginalized
seeking refuge from the atrocities
being leveled against them
in their own countries is not the
existential threat to our nation
that is being portrayed.
Our leaders need to rise
above hatred and show moral
fiber and character not disdain
for the color of skin, religious
beliefs, or country of origin.
While our current leadership
fails to appeal to their better
angels, we must remember true
leadership resides within all of
us when we stand together.
We must confront the lies
with truth and compassion.
Though we are imperfect and
misguided at times, we must
continue to shed the shackles
of injustice, be judged by the
content of our character, fight
our true enemies, work toward
the freedom of all humanity, and
stand resolute in the face of despair.
