Letter: Reader recalls early days of Weiser fiddle contest

Editor:
I have been away from
Weiser and Idaho for many
years, but I like to occasionally
check in to see what is
going on.
I just saw that Weiser will
once again host the National
Oldtime Fiddlers’ Contest.
Does anyone remember how
this was started?
I am amazed that it is still
going strong. I am not sure of
the exact year, but it had to be
about 1960.
A person by the name of
Blaine Stubblefield, who
was, I think, a member of the
Weiser Chamber of Commerce,
felt Weiser needed
something that would be
unique to the area and would
bring people to Weiser.
That is how the festival
started and evidently has
been successful for over 60
years.
Blaine ran a hardware
store that carried a little bit of
everything.
I especially remember this
huge round of cheese he had
on a counter and would cut
off a piece requested by a
customer.
I was a member of the
1957 graduating class of
Weiser High School.
I have lived in a suburb of
Cleveland for the last 51
years, but I still consider
Weiser and Idaho “home.”
Do you include the history
and recognize Blaine Stubblefield
for his contribution
to this event?
