Letter: Parade committee's intent was to honor grand marshal

Editor:
This letter is in response to
the Harper family’s letter of
July 3 regarding the grand marshal’s
car in the fiddle parade.
I am one of a handful of
volunteers who organize the
parade each year. Three of us
meet early to pick the theme
and grand marshal and then
on parade day about 10 volunteers
line up the entries to
flow smoothly and timely.
We are happy to donate our
time to ensure a fun day for
the people, especially the kids
of Weiser.
The grand marshal is usually
selected based on the person’s
many years of community
service. Because of that,
the person chosen is often a
senior citizen. It was brought
to our attention that in the
past there has been trouble
using a convertible vehicle
because of the heat.
We realize visibility is better
in a convertible, but the
grand marshal’s comfort and
safety are important. Because
the cars are donated, we have
no idea what the vehicle will
be until it shows up for the
parade and Lila was informed
of that prior to parade day.
Our only intention was to
honor Lila Harper and that is
what we tried to do. I believe
Lila, always gracious, understood
that.
