Last second shot on goal called back

The Weiser Wolverines girl’s soccer team faced off against the Payette Pirates on Tuesday, a game that had been previously delayed due to poor air quality. The two teams are a close match for one another and the game ended in a tie 2-2.
To start off the evening, the Wolverines celebrated senior night, honoring seven seniors. Melissa Sandoval, Gabi Palmer, Erika Lazaro, Jennifer Juarez, Melodee Cathey, Rhianna Soliz, and Kathy Rivera were all honored for their contributions they have made to the WHS soccer program.
The first half of the game against the Pirates made for a lot of back and forth action. Goalkeeper Sandoval had several stops throughout the first half. Cathey took several shots on goal but seemed to be off on her timing to get the shot past the Payette goalie.
Elle Svedin, Soliz, and Palmer all took shots on goal in the first half, but were stopped by Payette’s goalkeeper.
The second half of the game, the action picked up with Payette scoring near the beginning of the half. Weiser answered with Soliz scoring shortly after. Brooklyn Warner also took a shot for Weiser, but Payette stopped the Weiser shot and answered with a second goal of the night. Payette was ahead 2-1 with 25 minutes left in the game.
Coach Bernie Weldon shared that he was really proud of the team for not letting the Payette lead get into their head.
“No one panicked.  Everyone stayed fully engaged in the game, even on the sideline.”
After an offsides call on Payette, Weiser dominated the ball with several shots on goal by both Cathey and Soliz, with Soliz finally getting one passed the Payette goalie with 3:37 seconds left in the game.
“After Rhianna’s goal with 3 minutes left in the game, I was thrilled to see our team not satisfied with a tie.  Everyone kept pressing both defensively and offensively,” Weldon said.
The game ended with a thrilling finish when Weiser moved the ball from Weiser’s keeper, Sandoval, the entire length of the field to a goal from Warner with just seconds remaining. Warner took a shot at the whistle for the win, but the referee made a decision that the ball was shot after the whistle officially ending the game in a 2-2 tie.
“I was really proud of the way the varsity team kept playing literally until the clock ran out!” Weldon said.
The Wolverines faced Payette again in Payette on Thursday, October 1. That game also ended in a tie.
The girls will face both McCall and Fruitland this week and will head to the  district tournament the week of October 12 in McCall.
