Lady Wolverines work on skills at volleyball camp

Weiser High School’s girls volleyball annual summer team camp was held July 15-18. This is the second year the camp has been at Weiser High school put on by the Gold Medal Squared program, where three coaches visit Weiser to coach the girls while being hosted by some Weiser residents. There were two high school coaches and one college coach that came for the camp.
Varsity coach Lindsay Grant decided to switch over to Gold Medal Squared from the previous team camp at Northwest Nazarene University because of the science and history of the program.
“The U.S. National team and big Division 1 schools use the philosophy, and they have all been successful. There have been world championships and state championships won with the Gold Medal philosophy,” Grant stated.
The days of the camp were long and split into two sessions: morning and afternoon.
Mornings focused on the individual skills of the players. The drills were made to work on specific techniques and each players own strengths and weaknesses.
The afternoon sessions were more team focused, doing a lot of six on six scrimmages and team drills. This helps with the team dynamic and ability to play well together, knowing each other’s strengths, how one another plays, and who will get what ball depending on where on the court it goes.
For the rest of the summer, there will be some tournaments the team will be apart of, some open gyms, and a few more practices before tryouts on Aug. 12-13.
With the tryouts coming up fast, Grant expressed her thoughts on the upcoming season.
“Although we lost some dominant players last year and will greatly miss them, I’m really excited about what we have coming up. I think this year it’s going to be a big team sport. Everyone’s going to have to have a role and do that role well in order for us to be successful, and I think that’s something we can do,” Grant said.
The returning varsity players are senior Grace Soulen, senior Ciana Fuller, junior Reagan Doty, junior Macey Buescher, senior Bella Strasser, senior LynnZ Rasmussen, and senior Macy Marquez.
Anna Grandi is the new frosh/soph coach this year, and as a former middle for the Eastern Oregon volleyball team, she will provide a lot of help and knowledge to the girls, especially the middles of each team. Grandi also has coaching experience at both the college and high school level.
“I’m really excited about Anna. I’m excited about her and her knowledge she will give us,” Grant stated about her most recent addition to the coaching staff.
The first match the girls will play will be a home game against Baker on Aug. 29. Grant is excited and looking forward to it. She greatly enjoys her job and working with the girls.
When asked for any other thoughts, Grant just smiled and said, “It’s a great day to be a Wolverine.”
