Lady Wolverines take second place at state

The Weiser High School varsity girls golf team wrapped up another winning season with a second-place finish at the 3A State Championships on May 13-14 at Canyon Springs Golf Course in Twin Falls.
After two days and two rounds of 18-hole tournament golf, the Weiser girls tallied a team score of 780. The Buhl girls won the 3A state title with a score of 701, and the Homedale girls placed third with a score of 836.
The senior girls on the Weiser golf team must have had a sense of deja vu when the scores were added up at the end of day two. The Lady Wolverines also finished second to the Buhl girls in 2018.
The six 3A girls teams had one practice round on Saturday, May 12, to become familiar with the eastern Idaho golf course before the two-day state match started on Monday. The tournament was played under sunny skies and good conditions.
Weiser senior Sara Lundberg had a solid tournament and placed third among individual girls. Lundberg shot an 89 on day one and an 87 on day two. Her two-day total of 176 was just five strokes behind the second-place finisher from Kellogg High School.
Weiser’s Stella Beams finished in 10th place with a two-round score of 192. Teammate Sydnee Reyes carded a 199 for the tournament, followed by Faith Lee (213) and Ciana Fuller rounded out the scoring for Weiser with a two-day total of 227.
The Lady Wolverines successfully defended their titles as both the SRV Conference and SRV District champions earlier this month. The Weiser girls placed first at the 18-hole district tournament on May 8 on their home course at Rolling Hills Golf Course in Weiser. The win at district earned the Weiser girls a trip to state.
The Weiser varsity boys team finished in sixth place at the 3A state championships with a two-day score of 768. The Wolverines shot a team score of 394 on day one and shaved 20 strokes off their score for the second round, finishing with a 374.
The Fruitland Grizzlies, another team in the SRV Conference, won the 3A boys title with a score of 629. Kimberly came in second with a score of 696, followed by Kellogg High School with a team total of 714.
Kaden Cramer led the Weiser boys with a two-day score of 187. Mikaid Wall shot a 190 for the tournament, followed by Abe Konvalin with a 194 and Justin Estes with a 198. Chris Lee rounded out the scores for the boys with a 205.
Weiser coach Jon Lundberg said the trip to the state golf tournament was memorable, fun, challenging and rewarding.
“The community of Weiser can be very proud of our Wolverine golfers.  They represent our town, school, family, golf program, and themselves in the most classy way possible.  They are the best at their behavior, golf etiquette, effort, character and attitude,” he said.
The varsity boys qualified for the 3A state championship this year with a second-place finish at the SRV District tournament played in Weiser on May 8. The boys earned the trip to the state championships by the slimmest of margins over Homedale – a single stroke.
The Weiser boys missed the cut with a fourth place finish at the SRV District tournament in 2018 and did not qualify for the state championships.
Lundberg gave credit to his assistant coaches for helping the boys and girls improve their games during the season.
“I have the best assistant golf coaches one could ever hope to find with Monte Hurd, Larry Lee and Mike Ryan. They love our players and work so well with them. They make our players better golfers and, more importantly, better people,” he said.
