Lady Wolverines lose to Lady Vikings in second meeting this season

The Lady Wolverines had another busy game schedule last week, starting with a road match-up at the home of the Vale Vikings on Jan. 14.
In the previous contest against the Vikings, the Wolverines came away with a commanding 64-43 win.  Unfortunately, the tables were turned this time and the Vikings bested the Wolverines 55-40.
The first quarter was back and forth with neither team able to pull away on the scoreboard.  Although the Vikings shot only 29 percent from the field for 9 points and one free throw, the Wolverines struggled as well and fell behind 8-10 with a 27 percent field goal percentage.
Maddy Erickson recorded 4 points from the field and a free throw, Mattie Shirts added a basket and Tobie Noyer was successful on one of her two free throw attempts.
Despite successful baskets from behind the arc from both Ivy Morris and Shirts and two more free throws for Noyer, the Wolverines’ 8 points was no match for the hot hand of the Viking offense.
The Wolverine defense held the Vikings to only nine shots during the second period, but the Vikings were successful with a pair of 3-pointers and two baskets as well as 5 points from the line enabling the Vikings to take a 25-16 lead at the half.
Shirts added a pair of buckets and Erickson had a basket and a free throw in the third period while Marissa Moyle and Alex Bittinger had 2 points apiece.  However, the Vikings still outscored the Wolverines slightly (12-11), adding to their lead 37-27.
The scoring differential in the final period came down to free throws with the Vikings scoring 9 points from the field and 9 for 11 free throws.  Shirts added another pair of baskets and Morris had a basket from beyond the arc and a free throw, while Noyer had a field goal and a free throw and Moyle had 2 points, but the 13 points for the Wolverines was no match for the 18 Viking points, giving them the game 55-40.
Mattie Shirts led the Wolverines with 13 points and 7 rebounds, followed by Maddy Erickson with 8 points and 4 rebounds.  Ivy Morris has been hot of late from 3-point land, scoring two 3-pointers and a free throw while Tobie Noyer had 4 points from the line and 2 points from the field and had 5 rebounds.  Marissa Moyle added 4-points and 4 rebounds and Alex Bittinger had 2 points and 3 rebounds.
