Lady Wolverines have speed, deep bench

The Weiser High School varsity girls basketball team is preparing for the upcoming season that starts on Nov. 10 with a nonconference game against the always tenacious Melba Mustangs. With six returning starters from last year, the team has experience to go with speed and shooting skills. Look for a fast-paced offense this season, the coach said. The players on this year’s squad include, left to right, Macy Moore, Shelby Aldrich, Alex Bittinger, Sheyanne Hilmer, Maddy Erickson, Sara Lundberg, Abbey Shirts, Marissa Moyle, Madison Phillips, Stella Beams and May Erke.
Just as the seasons change outside and the fall colors make Weiser even more beautiful than it usually is, the seasons also change within the Weiser High School gymnasium, and the Lady Wolverines shift from volleyball season to basketball season. Thirty-five student athletes tried out for the three Wolverines basketball teams.
Head coach Nick Reed will be leading the Lady Wolverines varsity basketball team for his 11th season, and he is very excited about the group of girls.
“These girls are super athletic,” said Reed, and they all “have a great attitude and a strong work ethic,” which will be vital this season as Reed plans to play an up-tempo style.
That means running a lot and utilizing the team’s athleticism and speed by employing a full-court press against competitors.
Reed has a deep bench this season with 12 players. The extra girl power will be beneficial to the fast-paced play scenario that Reed has planned by providing breaks and fresh legs to keep up the speed.
The Lady Wolverines have six returning starters with seniors Sara Lundberg, Stella Beams and Abbey Shirts returning to the court, as well as junior, Marissa Moyle. Sophomore returners are Maddie Erickson and Shelby Aldrich.
New this season to the Lady Wolverines’ varsity squad but expected to make a big impact are seniors Sheyanne Hilmer and May Erke, as well as juniors, Macy Moore, Alex Bittinger, Madison Phillips and Andrea Bouvia.
Coach Chris Schultz will be returning for his sixth year at the helm of the junior varsity team, and has a large group of 12 experienced players at the JV level that should result in a successful season.
Schultz’s team is comprised of Chloe Eastis, Ivy Morris, Ellese Edin, Makaela Ruiz, Jenifer Juarez, Vicki Wyss, Judith Rios, Kaija Thompson, Lindsey McConnell, Rhianna Soliz, Shaylee Huggins and Jade Reyes.
Nikki Erickson will be leading the frosh/soph team for her third year. Erickson has nine players this year and is working hard on fundamentals to prepare them to be the future of the Lady Wolverine basketball program.
The frosh/soph squad is made up of Jaylene Milan, Kristy Bake, Maddie Cobb, Ellie Eames, Mecarte Olsen, Emily Pope, Kiearra Hoobery, Sarah Strange and Libbie Rynearson.
The Lady Wolverines start out the 2018-2019 basketball season Nov. 10 in a road match-up against the tough Melba Mustangs. The 2018-2019 Lady Wolverine basketball season is sure to be exciting. Plan to head up to Weiser High School to support this group of hard-working student athletes.
