Lady Wolverines handily beat Caldwell 29-7

The Lady Wolverines hit their home field for the first home game of the 2021 season for a non-league pairing against the visiting 4A division Caldwell Cougars on March 15, hoping to build on a winning streak following a 16-7 win over the Melba Mustangs and a heartbreaking, come-from-behind 10-16 loss to the Emmett Huskies.
Adding to their win column was exactly what they did, and they did it in commanding fashion in a 29-7 win in 4½ innings.
The Lady Wolverines started out a bit bumpy in the first inning, allowing the Cougars to get four runners across the plate before the Wolverines could stop the surge and end the at-bat for the Cougars.
However, in short order, the Wolverines made up and surpassed the scoring gap to take the lead 9-4 by the end of the first inning.  The Wolverines bats were hot with eight hits, and the impressive speed of the Wolverines was also difficult for the Cougars to handle.
With freshman, Danica Lockett in the circle and her defense on high alert, the Wolverines held the Cougars scoreless through the second and third innings, while the Wolverine batters continued to punish the Cougar defense.
Singles by Grace Swank, Mecarte Olsen, Macy Maloney, Tobie Noyer, and Kali Branstetter, coupled with six free bases for the Wolverines on balls or hit by pitches, allowed the Wolverines to bring eight more runs across the plate in the second inning.
Ivy Morris (two), Maloney, Noyer, Branstetter, Olsen, and Whitney Cordes kept the hot bats warmed up into the third inning, and the Wolverines took an even larger lead (24-4) with seven more runs in the third inning.
A couple defensive bobbles by the Lady Wolverines opened the door a crack for the Cougars, allowing three runs, but a strikeout by Lockett with the bases loaded, followed by a solo double play by Noyer to field the ball, tag the runner headed to third and touch second base for the force out, ended the at-bat for the Cougars.
Energized by the play and their lead, the Wolverines added five more runs to their credit in the bottom of the fourth inning with hits from Maloney, Noyer, Lindsey McConnell, and Morris.
Maloney, Noyer, G. Swank, and Olsen all touched home to take an insurmountable 29-7 lead over the struggling Cougars.
A scoreless fifth inning at-bat for the Cougars forced the mercy rule to come into play and put a W on the side of the Wolverines.
Ivy Morris led the Wolverines with five hits, five RBI, three runs, followed by Macy Maloney and Tobie Noyer with four hits, five RBI, and three runs apiece. Mecarte Olsen and Whitney Cordes added two hits, three RBI, and two runs each, while Grace Swank added one hit, two RBI, and two runs. Pitcher, Danica Lockett had one hit, two RBI, two runs and pitched 4.2 innings, allowing six hits, three runs and four walks.  Hannah Swank and Lindsey McConnell had one hit and three runs each and senior, Kali Branstetter, had one hit, one RBI and two runs.
The Lady Wolverines will resume play after the spring break against Jerome and Vallivue on Friday March 26.
