Lady Wolverines defeat Homedale 56-24

The Lady Wolverines hit the hardwood again in 2021, following the holiday hiatus, and traveled to the home of the Homedale Trojans for a league pairing last Thursday.
Within seconds of the opening tip the Lady Wolverines scored with a Maddie Erickson lay-up from a nice feed from Tobie Noyer.
The Lady Wolverines initiated their full-court pressure and it proved problematic for the Trojans. Coupled with strong defense and numerous steals, the Wolverines held the Trojans to only one basket and a pair of free throws.
Despite early Wolverine shooting difficulties, the Wolverines continued to surge forward with their defensive stance and rebounding, finishing the period with six-points from Erickson. Rhianna Solis added a three-pointer and Jasi Yraguen had two-points from a great steal, long ball pass and feed to Yraguen for the lay-up.
Leading 11-4 to start the second period, the Wolverines continued their offensive surge.
The first minute of the period was a little bumpy in the area of shooting success, given several opportunities, but the Wolverines quickly found their groove and capitalized on the opportunities that they made for themselves through good ball movement, looking for shots, strong rebounding, and a very successful full court press.
Following a free throw by Mattie Shirts, the Wolverines managed to score six-points in less than ten-seconds through the execution of their press and forced turnovers, rapidly expanding their lead to 18-4 with a mere 1:20 off the clock.  The Trojans tried to get back into the game, but the court presence and ball movement of the Wolverines was too much for the struggling Trojans.
With the four-points from Erickson, three-points from Shirts and two-points apiece from Ivy Morris, Yraguen and Macy Maloney, the Wolverines headed to the locker room for the halftime break with a 24-13 lead.
Head Coach Laraine Harrison continued to employ her full court pressure in the second half and the Trojans continued to struggle to find a counter for the defensive pressure.  Midway through the third period the Wolverines had expanded their lead 32-13 with four-points from Noyer and two-points each from Erickson and Shirts.
The Trojans managed to break the scoreless streak at 3:52 with a basket and a free throw, but the Wolverines quickly countered with a rebound and a put back by Shirts and five-points from Noyer to take a 39-16 lead.
The Trojans added a basket and a pair of free throws to their credit before the third quarter buzzer, but not before Erickson added two baskets and Solis contributed a bucket for a 43-20 lead.
The beginning few minutes of the final period was a bit messy, but the Wolverines soon regrouped to get back into their previous groove with good defense, rebounding and ball movement.
Shirts started it off with a rebound and the put back, while Morris drained a three-pointer. Yraguen snuck in the baseline for a basket and Ellie Svedin schooled her man-to-man defender twice with the drive and basket. Morris finished it all off with a great pass read for the steal and the fast break to take the game 56-24.
The Lady Wolverines successes on both ends of the court were evident with nine Wolverines scoring in the game.  Maddie Erickson led the Wolverines with 14 points, followed by Tobie Noyer and Mattie Shirts with nine-points each. Ivy Morris added seven-points to the tally, and Rhianna Solis had five-points. Both Jasi Yraguen and Elle Svedin had four-points apiece, while Jenifer Juarez and Macy Maloney had two-points each.
