Lace up the sneakers for Angel Wings Network fun run

Weiser Mayor Diana Thomas signs a proclamation recognizing October as ‘National Breast Cancer Awareness Month’ and declaring Oct. 1-6 as ‘Wear Pink Week’ and Oct. 6 as ‘Wear Pink in Weiser Day.’ Thomas was joined by Paddy Daratt, a volunteer with the cancer support organization Angel Wings Network. Angel Wings run/walk is Saturday at Weiser’s City Park.
The seventh annual Angel Wings Network 5K/1-mile fun run and walk will raise awareness about cancer while also raising funds to support those fighting cancer.
The “Walk Around the Park” will take place on Saturday, Oct. 6, from 9 a.m. to noon at Weiser’s City Park. The event coincides with Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October.
The first week in October will be “Pink Week” in Weiser and culminate with the run and walk on Saturday. The registration fee is $25 per team member or individual for the family and pet friendly event to benefit the Weiser-based nonprofit organization.
The event has a new central location this year at City Park. Participants who do the mile walk will loop the park. The 5K will take runners up to and around Memorial Park and back to City Park, where post-event activities will take place.
Although the cause of beating cancer is a serious subject, the fundraising event invites participants to show off their fun side as well. There will be two contests on race/walk day with prizes given out to the winners.
The best individual or team costumes that use a specific color, such as pink for breast cancer or one of the many other colors that represent the different types of cancer will compete for a prize.
The second contest will award prizes for the best repurposed or decorated T-shirt from a prior Angel Wings Network event. Participants can use their own T-shirt or request one from Angel Wings.
“I think it’s going to be just great,” coordinator Mabel Dodds said.
The 5K/1-mile fun run and walk is the biggest fundraiser of the year for Angel Wings Network. The organization also participates in the Idaho Gives fundraiser every year. All proceeds assist people fighting cancer in Weiser, Midvale, Cambridge and other rural communities in southwest Idaho and southeast Oregon.
Participants can pick up a registration form at the Angel Wings Network office at 773 W. Main Street or sign up on the morning of the fun run and walk at City Park.
Founded in 2008, Angel Wings Network, Inc. is a nonprofit, volunteer, community-based organization, dedicated to provide support to cancer patients, caregivers, cancer survivors, family and loved ones who have been touched by cancer. The organization assists with the emotional, physical and financial hardships associated with the disease.
Thanks to the generous support from fundraisers and donors, the nonprofit can provide gas cards, transportation to and from chemotherapy and radiation treatments, prescription assistance, meals, books for lending library, financial resources, prayer blankets, education programs and a greater awareness for rural cancer healthcare.
Angel Wings Network provides all of these services free of charge. The area of impact covers a radius of 70 miles from Weiser, including Ontario and areas of southeastern Oregon. For more information on the event or Angel Wings Network, call (208) 414-9464.
