The Lady Wolverines hosted the visiting New Plymouth Pilgrims at Tom Falash Gymnasium on Saturday.
COVID-19 has played a big part of this game as not only were the bleachers vacant, absent of any fans because of social distancing mandates, but part of the Wolverine team was also not in attendance.
Senior Maddie Erickson, junior Ivy Morris and sophomore Jasi Yraguen were all unable to compete either due to injury or quarantine. The balance of the team had to do double duty against the tough defense and strong shooting of the Pilgrim program.
It was nearly three minutes into the game before either team got on the board and the Pilgrims drew first blood with a free throw, followed by a fast break and lay-up and a basket from inside the paint.
Trailing 0-6, senior Jenifer Juarez halted the Wolverine drought with an outside shot.  Mattie Shirts pulled the Wolverines within one point with a two footer following a series of good ball movement passes to work it inside.
Tobie Noyer drained a long basket from the baseline allowing the Wolverines to take a 6-5 lead. She followed it up with a big shot block of a Pilgrim fast break opportunity.
The Wolverine lead was short-lived and through poor passing, turnovers and limited rebounding by the Wolverines, the Pilgrims went on a 14-0 scoring run to take a commanding 19-6 lead.
Ellie Svedin concluded the first period with an at-the-buzzer three pointer but the Wolverines still trailed by 10-points after one period.
The Lady Wolverines stepped up their struggling defense in the second period and improved their penetration into the paint to outscore the Pilgrims 14-10. The Pilgrims still maintained their 29-23 lead over the Wolverines going into the halftime break.
Despite only shooting 38 percent from the field as a team, Shirts hit the mark for six points, while Macy Maloney and Noyer combined for six points with a basket from beyond the arc for each of them. Juarez added another two points to her tally.
Juarez kicked off the second half for the Wolverines with a basket and a free throw. Shirts hit a bucket from the top of the key and Juarez added a basket from outside.
Maloney drove the lane for two points late in the quarter and Lindsay McConnell hit a bucket in the waning seconds of the quarter for a total of 11-points.
However, every forward motion for the Wolverines on the scoreboard was met with strong shooting by the Pilgrims and a counter for every basket that the Wolverines made.
The Pilgrims added 23-points to their credit in the third quarter, expanding their lead to 52-34.
The Lady Wolverines never gave up, despite the score, and they managed to limit the Pilgrims’ shooting opportunities in the final period.
The Wolverines’ 38 percent shooting in 15 attempts kept them from being able to close the scoring gap and lost the game to the Pilgrims 47-64.
Svedin added two baskets and two free throws to the score, while McConnell had two more baskets in the fourth quarter and Noyer added three points.
Shirts led the Wolverines with 10-points, followed by Juarez and Svedin with nine points apiece. Noyer was close behind with eight points and McConnell and Maloney added six points and five points respectively.
