The Weiser High School varsity tennis team had no trouble beating a Homedale team with a thin roster by the score of 11-1 on Thursday.
In other action last week, Weiser tennis continued a streak of wins during one of the best seasons in years for the Wolverines by beating Payette 11-1 on April 23 and getting a 12-0 shutout over 4A Emmett’s varsity on April 22.
Weiser coach Angie Soulen said Emmett’s tennis team lost a dozen kids to graduation last year so they were not as strong as previous years.
Still, beating the Huskies at home felt pretty good, she said.
The Wolverines traveled to Homedale to take on conference rivals Trojans last Thursday. Weiser ended up winning a number of matches by forfeit when Homedale was unable to put players on the court.
In boys singles, Weiser’s Bryce Bake beat Joseph Zamudio in straight sets 6-0, 6-1. Both the No. 2 boys singles player Eli To’omalatai and No. 3 boys singles player Ethan Davis won by forfeit.
In girls singles, No. 1 player Grace Soulen didn’t give up a game in her match against Cheyenne Kelly, winning 6-0, 6-0. Weiser’s No. 2 Andrea Bouvia won by forfeit and No. 3 Kristy Bake beat Abbey Henry 6-0, 6-0.
The Weiser boys No. 1 and No. 2 doubles team won by forfeit. The mixed doubles team of Pedro Ixta and Bentley Weldon beat Homedale’s Austin Conant and Lindy Phariss in two sets, 6-0, 6-2.
Weiser’s one loss came in girls doubles. Weiser’s Sienna McClellan and Brooke Anderson took on the tough Trojan duo of Makayla Kelly and Mikayla Smith and dropped the match 4-6, 4-6.
“The girls doubles match was the one we really wanted to win, but Sienna and Brooke played well and know what they need to work on coming into districts,” Weiser coach Angie Soulen said.
