Gov. Brad Little to headline GOP’s Lincoln Day dinner

Idaho Gov. Brad Little will be the guest speaker at the the 2019 Lincoln Day dinner hosted by the Washington County Republicans on Friday, Jan. 25.
The annual dinner is the biggest fundraising event of the year for the local GOP. The Lincoln Day dinner in Weiser is always one of the first in the state. From now through the end of April, nearly every county Republican Party across Idaho will hold a celebratory event honoring Abraham Lincoln, America’s 16th president and the first Republican to hold that office.
“It’s the only fundraiser we have and the biggest,” county GOP chairman John Jensen said.
There are 44 counties in Idaho and most, if not all, GOP central committees in each county will have some sort of Lincoln Day event, whether it’s a breakfast, lunch or dinner, which has been the tradition in Washington County.
Jensen, who was elected GOP central committee chairman in May of 2018, has not missed a Lincoln Day dinner since he’s lived in Weiser.
Washington County’s Lincoln Day dinner starts at 6 p.m. at the Weiser Elks lodge with a social hour. Tickets are $45 per guest for a prime rib or salmon dinner. There also will be a no-host bar.
The evening will feature a silent auction for some great items. The event also will offer a special raffle for a chance to win some guns, including a Ruger American Predator Rifle and a Glock 9 mm pistol. Tickets for the raffle are $20 each or six for $100. There are a limited number of tickets that will be sold.
The Lincoln Day dinner in Weiser is close enough to Boise that it usually attracts a few state lawmakers during the legislative session. The District 9 legislators, who are all Republicans, are likely to make the trip to Weiser. Secretary of State Lawerence Denney also might make an appearance.
U.S. Sen. Jim Risch has said he will make the dinner, and other members of Idaho’s Republican congressional delegation, including Sen. Mike Crapo, and Rep. Russ Fulcher, can usually be counted on to send a representative.
“We won’t know who is coming until they come,” Jensen said.
An Emmett rancher and former state senator, Little is well-known in Washington County. He has been married to the former Tereasa Soulen since 1978. He held the position of lieutenant governor for nine years from 2009-2018 after he was appointed. From 2001-2009, he served in the Idaho Legislature as a state senator.
He ran as a Republican for governor and won the GOP primary in May of 2018. In the general election last November, Little won with 59.8 percent of the statewide vote. His opponent, Democrat Paulette Jordan, a former state lawmaker, garnered 38.2 percent of the vote.
Little was sworn in as Idaho’s 33rd governor on Jan. 4 on the steps of the Capitol in Boise. He delivered his first State of the State address on Jan. 7 before a joint session of the Idaho House and Senate.
The Washington County GOP dinner easily sells more than 200 tickets. Tickets for the dinner can be purchased from any county GOP precinct person. There also are tickets available at 194 E. Commercial St. at the Duvall offices or call 549-2953.
