As part of Veterans Day activities on Monday at the Weiser Senior and Community Center, four local veterans who served decades ago were presented with colorful and patriotic Quilts of Valor.
The four quilts were made by a local group of quilters that includes Connie Lang, Barbara Goff, Linda Smith and Trina Leininger.
There is another group of local quilters that call themselves the Sewl Sisters who also make Quilts of Valor. Members include Jan Owens, Rhonda Plummer, Judy Scott and Sue Wait.
The quilters have made and presented 70 red, white and blue quilts for Weiser and Washington County veterans since May of 2014. The national Quilt of Valor program has given away 234,519 quilts.
All four local veterans were thankful for the special honor on Veterans Day. The senior center was crowded for the noon-hour event, which also included a special ceremony by retired Cmdr. Jim Grunke, a 37-year veteran of the Navy, and other veterans who made up a colorguard.
 Receiving Quilts of Valor were:
•Frank McGuire, who served in the U.S. Navy and Navy reserves as an E-6 from 1955 to 1978.
•Lyle Hill, who served for four years from 1948 to 1952 in the U.S. Air Force as a sargeant. He was stationed in Japan during the Korean War.
•Juan Huerta, who served as an SP2 in the U.S. Army and Army Guard from 1955 to 1962.
•Clarence Smith, who served in the U.S. Army Guard as an E-5 from 1957 to 1962.
The Weiser Cottages brought two veterans to the senior center so they could take part in the Veterans Day activities. Donald Patterson served in the Navy during the Korean War from 1951 to 1955. Vernon Kelley is a veteran of the U.S. Army.
Donations are always welcome by the Quilts of Valor project in Weiser and 100 percent of the money goes to purchase fabric and materials.
Anyone who would like to donate red, white and blue, 100-percent cotton fabric or money can bring it to the Weiser Senior and Community Center.
