Fifth graders perform favorite Christmas classics

Park Intermediate School’s fifth grade students performed their Christmas program on Thursday, Dec. 20. Nancy Grindstaff led the group as they entertained the audience with six Christmas songs. Park School’s honor choir also performed two songs during the program. The honor choir is composed of select fourth and fifth grade students who give up a recess two days a week to practice. On Thursday, Dec. 20, the fifth grade presented their annual Christmas program in the Weiser High School auditorium.
The fifth grade music program is led by Nancy Grindstaff. She shared with the audience that the group had been working on their presentation of some of their favorite Christmas classic songs since September.
The program started with the song “Wonderful Christmas Time.” The song, which was originally written by Paul McCartney was actually quite fitting to start with because the line “love choir of children sing their song, they’ve practiced all year long” described  perfectly what the audience was about to enjoy for the afternoon.
The next song was an “Old fashioned Christmas.” Grindstaff described this song as a newer song with 1940s Bing Crosby style.  Although the song isn’t as well known as many Christmas classics, it’s a favorite for choirs at Christmastime.
Grindstaff said the next song is a favorite of the students and she shared that because it is always such a favorite, this is the third year in a row that the fifth grade has sang “Holly and Ivy and Evergreen.”
The song by Teresa Jennings has a pop-flavor and definitely had the audience bobbing their heads and tapping their toes.
Next it was time for the honor choir performance. The honor choir is a tryout only choir that is composed of fourth and fifth graders who practice during the last recess two days each week. The fourth grade honor choir students joined the fifth grade honor chior students on the front of the stage. The group, which is led by Mike Turner, sang two songs.
The first song “Ding, Dong, Ding” by Greg Gilpin is deceivingly simple, as the lyrics feature only the three title words, but the layering  of vocals created a beautiful Christmas melody.
The next song by the honor choir, “Peaceful Night” is another piece by Teresa Jennings and is a two part song with a uniquely celtic feel.
After the honor choir performance, the fifth grade presented three more songs. The first, “Like Diamonds in the Night” is another song by Jennings that celebrates the effects of the light decorations decorating all the homes throughout the holiday season. The song was a round with individual classroom parts.
The next song, “Candy Cane Lane,” was the first song the students learned for the year, as the group first began rehearsing it in September. It is another homage to the effect of Christmas decorations on a neighborhood during the holiday season. The song has a combination R&B and hip hop elements.
Finally, the group wished the large audience a happy happy holiday with their final song “Have a Happy Happy Holiday.” The song was the perfect ending to the performance wishing the audience joy through the season.
