Enjoy the stunning beauty of the night sky in the dark

Dear Editor,
Dave and I moved to this part of Idaho over 35 years ago, looking for a place that didn’t have a freeway near it, lots of open sky and no city lights.
We have been saddened recently to see so many houses installing bright white lights either on their houses or in their yards that are left on constantly.
We’ve always assumed that anybody moving to the country is there for the
country life, which includes darkness.
We invite you to read the website www.darksky.org to see how you can change your lighting to make it more enjoyable for the community, with warm-white lights and less brightness, having a switch so they can be turned off altogether when not needed, down-lighting so the fixture lights up your property only, motion sensors, alarm systems if security is a concern, etc.
At the Idaho site www.idahodarksky.org you can find the Idaho cities and counties already implementing dark sky principles in their ordinances.
This summer had stunning sky watching at night, with the cleaner air of this summer. We would love to see that continue without creeping light pollution.
 Happy sky watching.
