The commission meeting room in the courthouse was crowded on Monday as elected officials were sworn in to begin their terms in office, along with deputies in the assessor’s office, clerk’s office and treasurer’s office.
All of the Republican candidates for elected offices in Washington County won their races in the May 2018 primary election and were unopposed in the general election.
The winners included county commissioners Lisa Collini and Kirk Chandler, county clerk Donna Atwood, treasurer Sabrina Young, assessor Debbie Moxley and coroner Bowe von Brethorst.
Prior to the swearing in, commission chairman Kirk Chandler said county officials are elected in a democracy by popular vote of the people, but the oath they take is to uphold the law.
Chandler also was sworn in for another term in office. He represents District 3 on the county commission and faced no opposition in the general election.
There was one new face on the three-member county commission as Lisa Collini took office representing District 1. She won the primary race in May of 2018 and was unchallenged in the general election last November.
After her first day as a county commissioner, Collini said things had gone great.
Outgoing District 1 commissioner Tom Anderson served two terms on the commission.  He declined to seek re-electionAnderson was presented with a plaque for his service to the county. Weiser Mayor Diana Thomas also gave Thomas a commemorative coin.
Anderson said he plans to stay in Weiser. He and wife Margie will do some traveling.
“It’s been enjoyable. I learned a lot. There is a lot more to it than people think about,” he said.
During his six years on the commission, Anderson cited some accomplishments that he said were beneficial to the county and residents.
Economic growth and getting Intrinsic Organics to build a $5 million plant here.
The ambulance district is on a good financial foundation with paramedics on at all times. A new house for ambulance personnel to stay while on call was purchased.
Moving forward with plans to make the fairgrounds accessible for the disabled and for senior citizens.
He said working with the sheriff to raise wages and stay on a vehicle purchase schedule to keep the department updated and safe for deputies was a goal,  he said.
