Duck Soup Radio Brigade to bring scary fun on Halloween

Halloween night will be full of extra fun and entertainment this year with the presentation of “The War of the Worlds” radio play presented by Weiser’s own Duck Soup Radio Brigade.
Duck Soup Radio Brigade (DSRB) is an acting troupe founded in 2018 by Narie Young and Tori Thomas.
The Brigade performs old-time radio plays based in the 1940s and 1950s eras. Young and Thomas are fans of old radio shows and audio dramas. The two said they knew other audio drama troupes around the country were performing original and classic radio plays and decided to also participate.
The first two performances of the Duck Soup Radio Brigade were a great success. With the need for social distancing this year, performing another radio show live on stage did meet guidelines.
In order to help everyone stay safe, the group decided to do things differently and this year’s radio show will be more like a classic radio show. The production will be a dramatic audio only performance done podcast style to allow fans to enjoy the show from their homes.
This year’s director, Jeff Craven, first became involved in the DSRB with last year’s performance of “It’s a Wonderful Life.” During the production, Thomas asked Craven if he would be interested in directing a Halloween show – the first of its kind for DSRB.
In the audio drama scene, the “War of the Worlds” radio play is a Halloween classic. It was originally broadcasted in 1938 by Orson Welles and the Mercury Theater on The Columbia Broadcasting System. Since it was performed as though the production was coming from a national radio broadcasting company, it has been reported that people believed the Martian invasion was real.
The cast for this year’s show will feature Wade Williams, Christy Williams, Fred Wheeler, Emily Abramson, Valorie Ruth and Micah Walker. These actors have been working to present a great show for everyone.
“They are really fun to listen to,” Craven said.
While rehearsals have been done via Zoom, the group is able to record in person because the Tea Room in the Snake River Heritage Center provides enough space for social distancing and to record safely.
While Craven has performed in a number of on-stage and audio productions, he said he has never taken on a directing project of this size. He said that he feels very honored to take on the challenge and to work with such a talented cast.
With 2020 having been a difficult year, the DSRB decided to use this opportunity to give back to the community. Tickets to listen to the radio show are free. Virtual tickets must be reserved at www.waroftheworldsshow.com.
