Defensive woes hurt Lady Wolverines in season start

The first outing of the 2019 softball season for the Lady Wolverines was on the road at the home of the Emmett Huskies on March 7.
The Huskies scored a run in the first inning, but sophomore Kali Branstetter recorded a solo homerun for Weiser in the second inning to tie the game. The Huskies continued to add to their lead every inning, and took an 8-1 lead by the sixth inning.
In their last at-bat, Branstetter was hit by a pitch and eventually scored. Kaija Thompson was able to score a run off a walk, but the rally ended with only the two runs. The Huskies took the game 8-3 in 6½ innings.
Weiser vs. New Plymouth (Doubleheader) 3/9/19
The Wolverines drew first blood against the New Plymouth Pilgrims off a walk of Alex Bittinger in the first inning that resulted in a run, but the Pilgrims tied the game in the second.
A pair of runs by Bittinger and Tyree pulled the Wolverines ahead 4-2 in the top of the third, but the Pilgrims capitalized on every free base and fielding error to score 10 runs in their third inning at-bat.
Tyree and both Ruiz sisters came across the plate in the fifth inning, but the scoring deficit was just too great, and with an additional three Pilgrim runs in the fourth and one run in the fifth, the Pilgrims took the game 15-6.
During the second game of the double-header, the Wolverines were never able to find any footing and despite a pair of runs by Makaela Ruiz and Westi Walker in the second inning, the Pilgrim bats were unstoppable and took the 4½ inning game 21-2.
