Countywide hazard mitigation plan due for update in 2019

Washington County recently began the process of updating its Natural Hazard Mitigation Plan.
This plan examines the risks posed by the natural hazards that affect Washington County and develops strategies to reduce the impacts from those hazards.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) requires counties to update this plan every five years to remain eligible for federal funding for hazard mitigation projects.
The cities of Cambridge, Midvale, and Weiser are currently recognized jurisdictions in the plan and will adopt the 2019 plan update.
This project is funded through a grant from FEMA and the initial “kickoff meeting” was held Dec. 13 in Weiser.
A planning team will work with Washington County Emergency Management throughout the update process. The team consists of representatives from local agencies, organizations, governments, and groups.
Northwest Management, Inc. has been retained by Washington County to provide risk assessments, hazard mapping, field inspections, interviews, and to collaborate with the planning team to update the plan.
Community input will also play a key role in the 2019 plan update. Public meetings, reviews of the plan, and a public comment period will be announced in the future.
The Natural Hazard Mitigation Plan update is projected to be completed by October of 2019.
