Chavarria announces bid for office of Weiser mayor

Alex Chavarria has announced that he will be running for the office of Mayor for the city of Weiser this November.
Chavarria was born and raised right here in the Weiser community and graduated from Weiser High in 1979. He married his wife Ronnell and had four children. Chavarria joined the Air Force after graduating and was stationed out of Washington D.C.
Chavarria spent 30 years away from home, at one point living in Florida running his own business, but the plan was always to return home to Weiser.
“We love Weiser, both Ronnell and I. So we always knew we would come back.”
Since returning home Chavarria has worked for the city of Weiser, the Vendome Events Center and eventually founding his news organization, LivingInTheNews.com.
For the past ten years Chavarria has been actively involved in the Weiser community. He has attended most City Council meetings in the last couple of years and is involved on several boards and organizations such as: Hospital Foundation Board, Fiddle Festival and Contest Board, ROSE Advocates, Weiser Little Theater, Illustrious Onion Skin Players, the Senior Center, Chamber of Commerce, American Legion, Arrow-Heart Adventure Camps and the Economic Development Board.
Chavarria also is the coordinator for the local blood drives and is a member of the Elks. Through his involvement Chavarria has been able to see the inner workings of the community and how the city is run. From these unique experiences he has been able to gain an understanding of the community and its wants and needs.
“I have seen how Weiser runs. I have worked with city government a lot through my business Living in the News. I am not a bystander. I am someone who wants to make things happen in our community and wants to provide opportunities for growth.”
Chavarria is in favor of growth, but wants it to be quality growth that enriches our community, “Even though we are a tourist town and I understand that people come here for those experiences, this is also a town we live in and we need to enjoy it also.”
He wants the growth to provide local employment for its citizens, but not take away from the small business owners.
“We need good small business owners. That’s what downtown Weiser is built on. But we also need manufacturing type businesses outside of town to help provide employment for local community members.”
Chavarria believes we can promote growth through expanding current events and organizations such as the Weiser Little Theater, Onion Skins, Fiddle Contest, Weiser River Music Festival, Festival of Trees, parades, rodeos and the Chamber’s events like the Crab Feed and the Halloween Spooktacular just to name a few.
He shared that there are recreational resources too that the community could utilize to bring in more tourism such as the Mann Creek area, Sand Dunes and rivers. Chavarria wants the community to be a wonderful place for people to visit, but wants to keep the community safe and enjoyable for its residents.
Chavarria believes that an advantage he has comes from the community itself.
“I surround myself with people who want to make things happen in our community. I surround myself with passionate people that want to help our community.”
He shared that he’s not a politician, but a regular citizen in the community who wants to keep our home a great place to live and raise a family.
“I am not afraid to ask the hard questions. I am going to keep asking questions until we find what’s best for our community. I am passionate about our community. That’s why I am here. That’s why I want to stay here.” Chavarria continued saying, “I compliment the past couple of mayors and the city council, they have done a great job and I want to build upon what they have already established.”
