Candy shop voted best in state of Idaho

Weiser Classic Candy is no longer just an area icon.
It has become something bigger, the home-grown confectionery winning the 2022 Idaho’s Best Business Award for best candy shop, not only in the Treasure Valley region but the state.
“I was blown away,” said Nauman who was notified last spring that he won a regional award and soon after informed that he won the state “best of” title.
Nauman kept the honor somewhat close to the chest until last week when he finally received his official plaque, which was months delayed due to supply chain issues. He plans to display it, of course, inside Weiser Classic Candy.
“We’ve been nominated before and I’ve gotten second place a couple of times in the region, but I’ve never won the best of the Treasure Valley and have certainly never won the state,” he said on Monday.
Idaho’s Best is one of the biggest “best of” business award programs in the state of Idaho. Nominations are made by customers based on their personal experiences.
Through nominations, voting, and Google reviews, winners are selected for four regions, including Central Idaho, Eastern Idaho, Idaho Panhandle, and Treasure Valley. There is also a statewide winner for each business category that is announced at an awards ceremony, which Nauman was unable to attend.
Categories range from Idaho’s best accountants and dentists to electricians and auto body shops. There were a total of 1,082 entries this year.
Nauman said the nominations are made anonymously.
“It’s a blind nomination, so I have no idea who nominated me. It must have been a customer, but who knows – maybe it was my mom. Mom’s do those things,” he chuckled.
Since nominations are based on customer experience, it only makes sense that Weiser Classic Candy was a front runner.
“When you boil it down, it’s all about my core values as far as running my business,” Nauman explained. “First, I treat all my employees like they are family. I learned from my mentors at a very early age that your most important asset is your employees, and I’m a firm believer in that policy.
“I also teach every single employee that the one thing I expect them to do, and do really well, is give exceptional customer service. It’s all about putting our best foot forward every single day and every customer is just as important as the next.”
But Weiser Classic Candy, as most people know, has a winning product line, including an array of homemade candies that dates back to the original owner, Fawn Olsen, who opened the shop in 1986.
Nauman bought the business about 15 years ago, renamed it Weiser Classic Candy, and eventually added some new candy recipes, including a new fudge line. He also offers roasted nuts and, most recently, espressos and coffees. The shop is a busy place during lunch hours, offering a full line of deli sandwiches and ice cream.
He sells product in Idaho, Oregon, and Washington.
“One of my goals is to sell to more stores,” he said in June during his 15th anniversary celebration. “One of my goals was to make Weiser Classic Candy a destination location and I’m just now starting to realize that.”
