A big thank you to all of our military veterans

Mayor Diana Thomas
As I write this column, election day is not over and we don’t know the outcome. Hopefully, we can move on in a more positive vain then after the last election.  It is time.
Congratulations to the Chamber and Weiser Business community for the great Halloween Spooktacular.
Having so much together for our kids will be a great new tradition to ensure a fun and safe night for our children and parents.
It was a little crisp but that doesn’t deter those princesses and super heroes as well as the rest of the characters and their families.
Parks are closed up for the winter. Restrooms have been winterized and locked.  The RV dump is currently still open.
The street department should finish alley clean up by the end of this week and have started leaf pickup on the west side of town beginning at State Street and moving west. Leaf pickup will continue as the weather permits.
Garbage pickup is back to one day a week.  If you have questions contact the city office.
During the construction along East 6th Street, there will be interruptions to traffic and we will try to keep the public informed before they occur when we can and receive needed information ahead of time.
Truck traffic will continue to occur so please drive carefully and be patient. Do not pass on the right side.
This week we will be celebrating and honoring our veterans and their service to our country.
As a former teacher, I have noticed the different spellings of ‘Veteran’s Day, Veterans’ Day and Veterans Day so decided to consult the ever-knowing Wikipedia on the internet. This is what I found:
“While the holiday is commonly printed as Veteran’s Day or Veterans’ Day in calendars and advertisements (spellings that are grammatically acceptable), the United States Department of Veterans Affairs website states that the attributive (no apostrophe) rather than the possessive case is the official spelling “because it is not a day that ‘belongs’ to veterans, it is a day for honoring all veterans.”
I appreciate the idea that it is a day for honoring all veterans. Our schools will be in session on Monday and always provide great programs with the help of a group of loyal volunteers so our students continue to learn of the sacrifice of our veterans and their families.
They combine the memorializing of those who lost their lives in service to our country through the various wars with honoring those who are currently serving to protect our country and its citizens.
Although Memorial Day is observed to remember those who have died, this joint observance connects to two holidays honoring our veterans. There will be observances at the schools, the Elks Lodge and the Senior and Community Center. Check local media for times and places.
Thank you to those currently serving in our armed forces and to their families for their support and sacrifice while these service people are away from home and family.
We appreciate for loyalty and love for your country. God bless you all.
