Are you prepared when the power goes out?

This article is of the utmost importance but it also is a very sensitive subject.
Electricity dependence is one topic that most folks don’t talk much about, whether its embarrassment or independence that keeps the conversation at a minimum.
Some people in our community that rely on electricity to keep critical lifesaving equipment functioning go unnoticed.
One of the jobs that the County Emergency Manager does is to help protect and offer resiliency ideas for our citizens no matter how large or small situations become.
Power outage is one topic most of us overlook in terms of critical need. Yes, we become upset when the lights go out, but for some it is life threatening.
Most power outages are short-term from a storm or an auto accident and are back on line within a few hours. But what about a long-term outage for days maybe weeks. What do we do then?
At this time we have very few backup power equipped facilities, most are critical infrastructure facilities, mainly water delivery and waste treatment along with some emergency services facilities.
The process of developing additional facilities are expensive and outside funding is very limited.
This is a time for neighbors to help neighbors with these special needs. Most medical professionals can’t tell response organizations who these people are.
Individuals with electricity dependence need to forward plan where to seek assistance if there are power outages beyond their personal capabilities.
Developing a network with family, friends, and neighbors along with faith based organizations is one of the first steps.
Preparedness starts at home, have family discussions and make a plan with contacts and all other important information.
Assess your needs and trigger points that indicate when action should be taken, trying to figure it out after the fact is when bad situations escalate the fastest.
If you need backup power there are many options from short term battery to backup generators. Possibly you have an RV or something similar with power options that you can use as a power backup.
It is always best to find your options before you need them. If you don’t have any other resources available be sure and let someone know you may need assistance making arrangements for power.
