Coming off of an overtime loss to Nampa High School on Dec. 19, the Weiser Wolverine men met the Ridgevue Warhawks in a home game on Tuesday.
It opened with quick scoring by both teams. Austin Ramos of Ridgevue scored first with a turnaround jumper. Weiser’s Tyler Pope answered with a reverse layup.
Ridgevue’s Isaac Mercer hit a baseline three-pointer. On the other end Weiser’s Brett Spencer hit a three with an assist from Ray Calley.
Ramos got a kickout pass at the baseline for another Warhawk three-pointer.
The Lady Wolverines took on the Ridgevue Warhawks in Weiser on Tuesday.
Ridgevue made their first point on a free throw by their quick point guard Sarah Means. She was fouled by Jenifer Juarez on a drive to the bucket.
Mattie Shirts dominated the boards coming down with 16 total rebounds for the night. At about the mid-point of the first quarter she came up with a big offensive rebound and went back up adding two points.
The Lady Wolverines traveled to the home of the Fruitland Grizzlies last week for a league pairing with all of the Wolverines present and accounted for on the hardwood.
Weiser bested the Grizzlies on their home court in grand fashion, 69-53, making the Wolverines undefeated in the Snake River Valley Conference, to-date.
Coming off a conference win against the Fruitland Grizzlies on Tuesday the Lady Wolverines hoped to play solid in the Tri-County Classic in Canyon County versus three 4A schools, Columbia, Caldwell, and Nampa.
Thursday, Dec 17
Weiser wins 45, Columbia 40
In the first matchup Weiser faced Columbia. Early in the first quarter, Weiser and Columbia traded missed shots at each end. Three minutes into the game Columbia worked the ball inside for the first score of the game.
The Lady Wolverines hosted the Payette Pirates on Tuesday, Dec. 8, ending in a win, 70-56, for Weiser in their first conference match of 2020.
Opening tip off went to Weiser’s Tobie Noyer who drove in for a quick two points.
Both teams used full court pressure, generating a fast-moving game.
The first three minutes of the game were a frenzy of action, Weiser five, Payette six. This is where Weiser came alive with their press and had a few defensive stops. Ivy Morris added a nice three pointer to take the lead 8-6.
The Weiser Wolverines traveled to Melba on Thursday, Dec 10 where they met the Mustangs for the second time. Weiser came up short losing 39-69.
Melba’s Braden Volkers was first to score. After a few trips down the court, with 6:18 left in the first Weiser’s Ray Calley scored a midrange jumper. Weiser 2, Melba 4.
Weiser possessed the ball for much of the first quarter working it around on the offense. Melba played tough defense not giving Weiser much to look at on the inside. Melba converted on most of their possessions.
Weiser wrestling is back in action for the upcoming 2020-21 season.
Many of the wrestling tournaments that the team normally participates in have been cancelled due to COVID-19. Weiser normally travels to several towns in Oregon to prepare before starting their conference season however, Oregon has cancelled wrestling for the time being.
Weiser has been practicing for a couple of weeks. Their first meet was scheduled for the Bucks Bags tournament in Post Falls on Dec. 4-5 but due to safety precautions was cancelled.
The Weiser boys’ basketball team and coaches are thankful they are able to be on the court. COVID-19 restrictions have forced schools to make major adjustments, one being no spectators are allowed at the games.
The Wolverines are looking to recreate their team with young vibrant talent. Brett Spencer is the only returning full-time varsity player.
This 2020-21 team is no stranger to winning, they are the defending JV district champions. Coach Brad Adolfson has a game plan for the season and knows in due time this team will bring it all together.
With Nampa High School being unable to play on Dec. 11 due to COVID-19 restrictions, the Friday night Nampa Christian contest was added.
There was no lack of energy on the court. Both Weiser and the Nampa Christian Trojans run a quick explosive game.
The Trojans won the tip but their offense turned it over.
Weiser immediately switched ends of the court with Willy Shirts hitting Brett Spencer at the top of the key, draining a three for the first points of the game.
The Lady Wolverines hosted the visiting New Plymouth Pilgrims at Tom Falash Gymnasium on Saturday.
COVID-19 has played a big part of this game as not only were the bleachers vacant, absent of any fans because of social distancing mandates, but part of the Wolverine team was also not in attendance.
Senior Maddie Erickson, junior Ivy Morris and sophomore Jasi Yraguen were all unable to compete either due to injury or quarantine. The balance of the team had to do double duty against the tough defense and strong shooting of the Pilgrim program.
