Community Church Groundhog Feed

The Weiser Community Church is holding its 65th Annual Groundhog Feed on Groundhog Day, Saturday, Feb. 2.  Lunch will be from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and dinner from 4 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The event will be held at the Community Church, 240 E. Main Street and the entire community is invited to come and enjoy a good old-fashioned meal of comfort food.  The menu consists of sausage patties, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, apple sauce, cole slaw and the works including dessert. The cost is $8 for adults, $5 for kids age 6-12 and kids 5 and under eat Free.  Sorry, no takeout’s.

Lincoln Day Banquet

The Washington County Republican Central Committee will host their annual Lincoln Day Banquet on Friday, Jan. 25 at the Weiser Elks Lodge. Washington County Democrats will hold their regular meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 22 at 7 p.m. at the Weiser Senior and Community Center, 115 E. Main. Love INC Free movie night

Love INC will have a free movie night at the Star Theater in downtown Weiser on Friday, Jan. 18 at 7 p.m. The movie will be “Like Arrows.” This is a quality family movie about parenting for all ages from those who don’t have children yet to grand- and great-grandparents. There will be popcorn and water included at no charge.

Soup Kitchen

There is such a thing as free lunch. St. Luke’s Soup Kitchen opens every Thursday at 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. from Jan. 10 until March 14. Beefy tomato, cream of broccoli, chicken noodle and more are some of the soups featured weely in the parish hall at East First and Liberty streets in Weiser. All are welcome for food and fellowship.

Tariffs have good and bad consequences

Tariffs are a tricky business that bring with them some intended and unintended consequences.
 Farmers in the Midwest are not selling soybeans to China like they used to. In a tit for tat move, the Chinese are buying soybeans elsewhere and boycotting the U.S. in retaliation for stiff tariffs imposed on Chinese imports.
 President Trump spoke to farmers this week in New Orleans at the annual convention of the American Farm Bureau Federation. 

Please clean up after your dogs when downtown

Congratulations to our new Washington County officials. Monday was swearing-in day and the full change over has taken place.  
 Thank you to Tom Anderson, Georgia Plischke, and Betty Thomas for their many years of service to the residents of Washington County and enjoy your retirement.
 While out on my walks around town, I noticed that we have people walking their dogs around the downtown, which is great.   
 However, some owners are not taking time to pick up after their dogs. I realize some of the mess is caused by dogs running loose.
